Description

A nasty rumor spreads through school with lightning speed. A bully’s taunt reaches its target instantly. A young teen is caught “sexting”—sending sexually explicit images or words over a cell phone. Today, kids no longer have to wait to get to a desktop computer to see and hear all the latest gossip. It’s right in their hands, on their cell phones, mobile email devices, and handheld computers, giving them the ability to take and send pictures and videos and instantly access social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Using dramatic scenarios as well as first-person experiences, explores the positive and negative sides of this new technology. Gives viewers a primer on the Do’s and Don’ts of text messaging, including the laws on privacy and child pornography, setting and maintaining personal boundaries, dealing with unforeseen consequences, and underscoring the need to “think before you click”.

Includes: 19-minute video, printable teacher’s resource book, and student handouts with pre/post tests.

Reviews:

Highly Recommended “Think before you click” sounds like common sense, but it is something our teens need to be reminded of. Using dramatic scenarios, this video explores the positive and negative sides of these new technologies including discussions on cyberbullying, stalking and exposing one’s self to danger. It gives students a frank discussion on the Dos and Don’ts of text messaging, including the laws on privacy and child pornography, setting and maintaining personal boundaries, and dealing with unforeseen consequences. An article in neaToday magazine reported that 20 percent of girls ages 13 to 19 had engaged in sexting. So while students may be tired of hearing about the dangers of texting, they don’t seem to take the information to heart. This DVD offers a refreshing discussion of being responsible for your own actions and considering the consequences. A teacher’s resource book, pre/post test, student activities, and fact sheets accompany the DVD.

This fast-paced production warns of the dangers associated with some widely used text messaging practices. Two young hosts open with a review of safe cell phone and text messaging guidelines, and then introduce several brief scenarios that illustrate the problems that can arise from overuse and late-night use of cell phones, using cell phones to cheat in class, and riding with older teens who are texting while driving. They also examine the legal and moral repercussions of “sexting,” which involves sending sexual images through cell phones; the problems of using text messages to spread rumors and harass other teens; and the dangers that can result from predatory adults who use text messages to lure teens. The film ends with the hosts revisiting the scenarios, all of which are altered by teens making better choices, and a recap of the film’s safety message. The live-action footage is supplemented by on-screen graphics that reinforce the cautionary message. The teacher’s guide includes a number of classroom activities to help students understand and evaluate their own cell phone and texting practices. Although this message has been widely circulated in other media, this film will help tweens and young teens better understand the need to use common sense and restraint when they text. It could be used in health or family classes and is a good choice for middle school and junior level libraries.
